$42 Million Dollar Bionic Eyes

Remember the 6 million dollar man? How about the 42 million dollar eyeball? Thanks to the Australian Government, Bionic Vision Australia received a $42mm fund to build a “bionic eye” that is intended to restore sight to the blind. The company  is working on bionic eye shades, which will restore sight virtually to people with vision impairments or blindness. By using a camera installed inside the sunglasses, the sunglasses send images back to a computer chip in the retina for the brain to process. Bionic Vision Australia’s goal is to launch the sunglass technology by 2013. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the Aussies can make this miracle come to light!

Gaga’s Cigarette Sunglasses

In her newest music video Telephone, the glamorous Lady Gaga redefines the term smoke tinted lenses. I must confess, checking out Gaga’s off the wall eyewear is a guilty pleasure of mine, and here’s newest flick doesn’t disappoint. Teaming up with the benevolent Beyonce, “Telephone” takes place in a steamy women’s prison, where Gaga is scantily-clad, covered in chains, and wearing some smoking hot cigarette sunglasses (courtesy of Haus of Gaga). The last time I saw a music video with a woman in chains was the 1980s, via Motley Crue.

Anyhow, you can check out Gaga’s cancer stick shades below. Though they tagged this as the “clean” version, it might make you feel a little dirty.

Upgrade Your Face Show

Upgradeyourface.com show was a hit last night. Stompin Grounds was packed, but not too packed to make the show uncomfortable. We were blessed with some awesome performances by Jon English and his band, Justin Black and Big Heart, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, and the rockin’ Back Pocket Memory. The acoustics in S.G. were surprisingly very good, and Mr. Black let us borrow his p.a. as he ran sound. Thanks Justin! We even had a surprise showcase from Nicole Vaughn from California. We gave away some awesome Electric Sunglasses, and there will be more giveaways in the very, very near future.

It’s St. Paddy’s Day and I’m not wearing green (forgot to wash my only green shirt). Here’s a few vids of some of the bands that played last night, and our awesome St. Paddy’s Day vid. Thanks everyone!

Spring Break Sunglasses

It’s spring break everyone! At least for students and teachers, and for SXSW attendees. It’s was a busy weekend in Austin with  SXSW Film and Interactive, and the Kite Festival at Zilker Park, all with some wonderfully sunny weather to boot. As you can probably imagine, almost everyone who was outside in Austin had some shades strapped to their head. If not, they were squinting and flinching from the bright sunlight showering the city. As I was strolling around Zilker Park on Sunday, marveling at the thousands of kite strings getting tangled up as people walked backwards into each other, it was impossible not to notice the main sunglass trend for this spring break in 2010.

This sunglass trend was in such abundance around town that my friends and I started a game of how many of these particular shades we could count in an hour. After the number soared up higher than we anticipated, we decided to switch the game to counting sunglasses that WERE NOT this trend. This game was much more casual, and easier to remember. In short, I believe that I have narrowed down the major sunglass trend of spring break ’10 to one winner, based on my own and others’ observations around Austin: White Ray Ban Wayfarers.

Harpoons and Sunglasses

Aside from our own Upgrade Your Face Showcase, there are a few other sunglasses-themed events going on during SXSW. Ezra Furman and the Harpoons, who blew up pop radio in 2008 with their hit single, “Take Off Your Sunglasses,” will be playing two events on Wednesday, March 17, delighting the crowd with songs from their album Inside the Human Body. They’ll be performing at the live.create.lounge on the corner Neches and 7th Street, and given that their time slot is 9pm, they’ll more than likely be taking off their sunglasses themselves.
