Scratch-Resistant Lens Coatings |

Since eyewear tends to get mishandled from time to time, science has developed a lens feature that helps prevent your eyeglass or sunglass lenses from getting scratched. This technology is called scratch-resistant coating, and its purpose is to ensure that your lenses are clear of scratch marks, which can hinder the clarity of your vision.
![]() Scratch-resistant coating is a thin, transparent film that covers the exterior portion of your lens to protect the lens from scratches. The coating is composed of a polyester material, and it’s applied by a clear adhesive that forms a permanent bond with your lens; creating a hard exterior lens shield. The coating itself is virtually invisible to the naked eye, which makes it impossible to see when looking at or through the lens. Its complete transparency allows the coating to protect the lens without distorting your vision. Since the coating is bonded with the lens, it typically lasts for the duration of the lens itself. Scratch-resistant coating is available for most designer eyeglass and sunglass brands, and can be requested for if offered. Though the coating is coined as scratch resistant, it’s important to note that no scratch-resistant coating is 100% effective. Lenses with scratch-resistant coatings are still susceptible to scratch marks and damage, but the coating lessens the odds by providing some protection. For this reason, it is still important that you continue to care for your glasses by cleaning the lenses regularly and storing them in a case when they’re not being used.
