Celebrities and Their Sunglasses |

Celebrities have had quite the impact on sunglass popularity through the years. When Audrey Hepburn wore Wayfarers in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” everyone wanted to own a pair. The fire for Wayfarers was sparked again 22 years later when they were seen on Tom Cruise in “Risky Business.” A very popular frame thanks to celebrities, Wayfarers were also worn by the Blues Brothers, and are used in movies today. They can be spotted in “Couples Retreat,” “Takers,” and “My Name is Khan.” Aviators were designed by Ray-Ban in 1937 for the U.S. military fighter pilots. Their popularity boomed across the country when they were worn by Tom Cruise in “Top Gun.” Even today they are spotted on the silver screen: “17 Again,” “Knight and Day,” “Sex and the City 2,” and “The Hangover.” Other movies that helped the popularity of sunglasses were the Predators worn by Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith in “Men in Black,” the futuristic shades throughout “The Matrix,” and the boxy ANSI Classics worn in “The Terminator.” We have Jackie O to thank for fashionable oversized sunglasses, a trend that is still going strong. Celebrities and sunglasses that are popular today are shutter shades, brought back from the 80s by Kanye West’s “Stronger” music video, and orange-tinted shades sported by U2 lead singer, Bono.
