Colored contact lenses are being used more and more in music videos, movies, and as daily fashion accessories.
Music
The most well-known contact lenses used in a music video are those worn by Michael Jackson in “Thriller.” In that video, Jackson wears full-coverage cat eye patterned contact lenses to help his transition into a werewolf.
Lady Gaga’s digitally enhanced eyes in her music video for “Bad Romance” sparked a new craze for circle contact lenses, lenses that are wider than the iris and give the impression of having larger eyes. However, these contacts are illegal in the U.S.
Movies
Contacts are frequently used in sci-fi flicks and horror films. Many of the special effects contact lenses used in movies are hand painted. Makeup artists give special effects contact lens painters a picture of what they are looking for and it will be mimicked in the lens. These special order lenses are seen in “Night at the Museum,” “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” and “10,000 BC.”
The downside to special effects contact lenses being used in movies is that they usually make the wearer’s vision worse.
Fashion
Several years ago, Christian Dior expanded past designer frames into the realm of contact lenses. They made designer contact lenses with “CD” inscribed on one side, gold flakes covering the other; all this encompassed by a black ring.
Colored contact lenses of natural shades have become a popular accessory in recent years. They can be worn to simply enhance the color of the wearer’s eyes, or to completely change it.
